Morrie was the son of Forest Overseer - Dick Mair - at Halls Gap. In 1953 Maurie started with the FCV on the gang at Halls Gap. After graduating from the 1958 Foremans' School he worked under probation in the Otways (Forrest & Beech Forrest) and Korweingeboora. Because he couldn't work in the same area as his father, Maurie remained in Korweinguboora (Daylesford Forest District) until Dick retired. Then, from 1969 to 1976 Maurie was the FCV Overseer in Halls Gap.
