Areas affected by fire in the Black Friday bushfires

Picture of remote north-eastern forests aflame

Corryong

"Only a shower of rain saved the town but, by this time, a large area of remote north-eastern forest had gone up in smoke."

By the end of the first week of January 1939, many fires were already burning in the remote forests on both sides of the border between Victoria and New South Wales. On 10 January 1939, fires ringed Khancoban in NSW and were threatening Walwa on the Victorian border. Further north, Canberra was ringed by fires and more fires were burning in the bush around Mount Kosciusko. On 13 January, the fires were driven south by the northerly gale and Tintaldra and Pine Mountain were quickly ablaze, directly threatening Corryong. Only a shower of rain saved the town but, by this time, a large area of remote north-eastern forest had gone up in smoke.
