"The past is never fully gone. It is absorbed into the present and the future. It stays to shape what we are and what we do."
Sir William Deane, Governor-General of Australia, Inaugural Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture, August 1996.

The maps that are available through this page are all in development. As information becomes available that is relevant to a particular map it will be included.

Forest Facilities

This map will, in time, show the locations of forest camps, roads, airfields, towers etc and indicate the purposes for which they were constructed.

Peter McHugh has produced an article about forest camps which can be found here.

Erica Sawmills & Tramlines

The map below is being developed from information in:

Trestle Bridges and Tramways - The Timber Industry of Erica District 1910-1950, Mike McCarthy
(Published by the Light Railways Research Society of Australia)

At this stage sawmill sites only have been added, and the locations need to be checked.

Once that is done we will look at getting tramline routes onto the map.

The FCV owned and operated at least one tramline as part of the 1939 salvage operation.

Mount Disappointment  - Sawmills and Tramlines

This map is being developed from a map produced by the FCV in 1971. It shows sawmill sites and tramlines from that map, but treat the locations as indicative only at this stage. However, it does give some indication of the scale of timber harvesting that occurred in the area from about 1880 until 1939.
