Cold winds and widespread rain on Monday ended Victoria’s bush fore horror, at least for the time being. Further rain has been predicted. In the worst and most extensive fires in the history of the State, 66 people lost their lives, and three men and a woman are still missing. Damage to property is estimated at £400,000, exclusive of forest damage, which represents approximately £1,000,000. [WT, 21/1/39] |
