Wind Change Saves Town
Powelltown Mill in Danger
11 January 1939
A sudden change of wind at a critical stage turned the fire from Powelltown last night, when it was within a few feet of several houses in the town. Whipped over the ranges on the east side by a sudden blast of wind about 6 pm, the fire, carried ahead by flying [pieces of blazing bush, raced down on the township so rapidly that residents held little hope for their property. Just beofre 10 pm the wind changed and carried the fire beyond the settlement. [SNP, 11/1/39] |
