Shirt-Sleeved Scientists
10 January 1939
Canberra, Monday – Because of the heat, it was suggested today that men should attend the Science Congress, which opens on Wednesday, in their shirt sleeves, with open collars. The Director-General of Health (Dr Cumpston) favors this more comfortable dress, but conceptions of etiquette by some scientists may prevent it being adopted. Scientists travelled to Canberra today by train with their coats off. ...Clerks and typists ate ice-cream at work. Some girls fainted on their way to their offices. [SNP, 10/1/39] |
