Research Branch Report No. 089

Fertilising one-year-old, second-rotation Pinus radiata D. Don on steep slopes of the Ovens Plantation.  G. Minko.  June 1977.  8 pp. (unpubl.)

SUMMARY

This report gives a brief account of the study undertaken to determine rates of NP fertiliser required to achieve optimum early growth of second-rotation Pinus radiata D. Don on steep, dry slopes of the Ovens Plantation. The effects of fertilising were tested using 144 NP combinations replicated on four sites with single tree applications of N from 0 to 33 g and P from 0 to 66 g.

Height increment differences between the treatments were not significant and though diameter differences were significant (p < 0.05), the response was slight. There were large and significant differences in treatments between sites. It appears that the use of fertilisers to accelerate site occupation on these dry slopes is not likely to be successful.
