SUMMARY

Two poplar leaf rusts Melampsora medusae, the American poplar rust and Melampsora laricipopulina, the European poplar rust, appeared in Victoria in 1972. Both rusts produce severe defoliation on a large number of susceptible poplar clones found in Victoria, and the disease could jeopardise cultivation of these varieties. A brief description of the disease symptoms and methods of controlling the disease is provided.
