SUMMARY

Spraying with a mixture of the chemicals “Vorox AA” and “Weedazol TL” in water was found to be an effective and safe means of controlling the majority of plant species re-invading areas recently cleared for P. radiata plantation establishment at Myrtleford.

When used on moist soil at a concentration prescribed in this report, the mixture controlled competing vegetation for over two years, and increased survival, height, and diameter growth of pine outplants. It was not necessary to protect outplants from the spray.

The mixture can be recommended for use in plantation areas where re-invasion of competing vegetation is a problem, providing the plant species composition is composed mainly of the susceptible species identified in this report. Cost of the mixture is approximately $44 per hectare ($17.20 per acre) for complete treatment, but substantially less if strip spraying (as used in this study) or spraying in spots is practiced.
