SUMMARY

This report describes the estimation of interim stumpage values for sawlogs from regrowth mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell) for use in management planning.

Stumpage was calculated as residual value by taking the cost of sawn timber on the Melbourne market, and subtracting costs and conversion losses between Melbourne and the stump. To simplify presentation of stumpage values for various stand locations, a quantity called “zero distance stumpage value” is defined as the sum of stumpage and log haul cost from the stump to the mill. The stumpage for a particular stand may be found by subtracting log haul cost from the zero distance stumpage value (ZDSV).

Long logs (bush logs 30 foot long) smaller than 3 foot centre girth under bark were found to have a negative ZDSV reflecting the fact that conversion costs used in the study exceeded the value of sawn timber produced. ZDSV increases with increasing centre girth, rapidly at first but at a decreasing rate until increases in girth beyond about 6 foot give only minimal increases in ZDSV.
